Memory Retention Model

"Memory retention rate" refers to the probability that a person can recall something they have learned. It is known to decay exponentially as time passes after initial learning. Furthermore, with each review, memory stability increases and the decline in the retention rate becomes more gradual, allowing high memory retention to be maintained over longer periods.

App Learning Workflow

1. Goal Setting for Each Card

Most flashcard apps on the market fail to account for a crucial factor: deadlines. In this app, users specify the target timeframe (number of days) and the desired memory stability level for each flashcard to define completion.

2. Two Review Tests

Once learning begins for a flashcard, the app prompts two review tests at optimal intervals. By analyzing the user's response time during these tests, the app estimates the memory retention rate and calculates how easily each card can be memorized.

3. Personalized Review Schedule

Based on the memorability calculated from the two tests, the app generates a custom review schedule for each card to achieve the target memory stability by the deadline. This enables users to consolidate their memory efficiently with a schedule tailored specifically to them.

This application was developed as part of a senior research project in the Information Systems course at Institute of Science Tokyo High School. We are currently conducting a verification trial for our algorithm, which estimates memory retention rates and suggests review schedules based on existing research.
